As
we enter the close which is situated nearby the
fountain at the lower end of the Dumfries High
Street it is apparent that the Globe building,
like many others of that century, has had many
of its additions, such as stables made into permanent
features by exchanging its timber construction
to that of brick walls and slate roofs. These
additions lend themselves to the curve of the
building and the character of the Inn.
Established
in 1610 the Globe Inn was a thriving tavern by
the time Robert Burns visited it in the 1780s.
Within the courtyard today can be seen iron art
work which was added to the close during the bi-centenary
celebrations.
