Through
another low doorway with a curved door we enter
the Burns Room a dark wood panelled room where
Robert Burns enjoyed many an evening with friends.
Perhaps enjoying supper or just a general discussion
on the news of the day, prior to returning initially
to Ellisland or latterly to Bank Street or Burns
Street.
Within
this room there are many fine examples of ceramics,
engravings, glassware, bottles etc. It was during
the Hyslop's time that the Mausoleum Committee
met within the Globe Inn on the 25th of January
1819. This was effectively the first Burns Supper,
when steps were taken to arrange an annual celebration.
On
one occasion Robert Burns forgot to order dinner
for Nicol, Masterton and himself. Meg Hyslop produced
a sheep's heid which she and Jock had intended
for themselves. Nicol 'fined' Burns for his neglect
by ordering him to compose grace. These stanzas
were the result ...
O Lord when hunger pinches
sore,
Do Thou stand us in stead,
And send us, from Thy bounteous store,
A tup or wether head!
O, Lord since we have feasted thus,
Which we so little merit,
Let Meg take away the flesh,
And Jock bring in the spirit!

Within
this room Robert Burns history and heritage includes
poems, pictures, gauger sticks, glasses, books,
busts, jugs and of course the famous Burns Chair
which was gifted to the poet and used by him on
his many visits to the Tavern. There's a story
here: if you sit in the chair you must recite
a line of Burns or your penalty is to buy all
the customers in the Bar a drink!

Also
on the wall is a picture of Robert Burns' funeral
in 1796 painted by a local Annan artist W.E. Lockhart.

On leaving the kitchen and Burns Room we ascend
the stairs bedecked with Robert Burns poems and
songs and enter the bedroom
